Getting around London by car
London is a wonderful destination for tourists, and there is just so much to see that you will not know where to start!
Although public transport is readily available, using a car rental is a much more convenient option for getting into the city; there is nothing worse than trying to battle the commuter crowds when you are laden down with luggage, and when you leave the train or bus you will still need a taxi, which is a very expensive option.
Parking can be a bit of a problem in central London, so it is advisable to book a hotel which provides parking for your car, and you can download a list of parking garages before you leave home.
Some of the London attractions you simply must not miss are the London Eye – great for getting your bearings and one of the best views in the City, the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben, Westminster Cathedral and, of course, Buckingham Palace and the Changing of the Guards.
After spending a day or two seeing the main sights you may need a bit of retail therapy – head for Westfield Shopping Centre (plenty of parking) where you can visit most of the big name stores under one roof.
Day trips from London by car
There are many great day trips to do from London, and with your own car you don’t have to stick to rail or bus schedules, and can just do things at your own pace.
Did you know you could even take a day trip to Paris by car and still be back in London for dinner?
You can drive your car onto the Eurostar train at St Pancras Station in central London, have a great English breakfast onboard and be in Paris in 2 hours!
Other really good options to consider are day visits to the famous university towns of Oxford and Cambridge, a trip to Bath and Stonehenge or a drive out to see Windsor Castle and Eton College.
And if you’d like to explore even further afield, consider a drive across to Cardiff in Wales to see the sights of one of the other countries that make up the United Kingdom.
The very best thing about having a hire car is that you can drive yourself (and your luggage!) directly to Stansted Airport at the end of your visit for an easy drop off.
