With its central location for most of the greater Bay Area’s attractions, a rental car from Oakland Airport provides the best option for visiting some of northern California’s most famous destinations like the wine country of Napa Valley a little more than 50 miles to the north, and one of America’s most important parks, the Yosemite, just three hours drive east.
Oakland’s Chinatown
Long in the shadow of its more popular neighbour San Francisco, Oakland still has its share of quirks that make it a worthy tourist destination.
Just to the south of the city centre is the city’s thriving Asian community: In the 15-block area known as Chinatown, there is a large enough and diverse enough range of Asian shops and restaurants you can comfortably get to by car.
A Piece of Venice in Lake Merritt
To the east of Chinatown is Lake Merritt where the sounds and sights of Italy come to life.
If you are curious how it feels like to ride a Venetian gondola, drive a mile to the east and be serenade by an authentic gondolier while enjoying the view from the water.
To the west of Chinatown, just south of Ola Oakland, is the area known as Jack London Square which is home to Oakland’s waterfront boardwalk.
Here you can enjoy the sounds of live jazz and blues music as you explore the shops and historical pub scene or watch the seagulls as you take a cruise beneath the Bay Bridge.
Oakland is also home to the Chabot Space and Science Centre, an 86,000sq-ft sci-fi playground which includes a planetarium and a space flight simulator.
Explore the Bay Area by car
By hiring a car you’ll be within short driving distance of popular destinations in the Bay Area.
You can drive north to witness life at Berkeley, one of the country’s best known universities, or go northeast of the town to the Oakland Hills where the Joaquin Miller Park boasts 50 acres of hiking and equestrian trails from where you can get superb panoramas of the whole Bay Area.
A drive 30 miles to the south of the city and you can go-kart at LeMans.
Continuing south you would come to San Jose, home of the Great American theme Park with its assortment of fun rides for the family.
You can also easily visit San Francisco across the bay to enjoy the dizzying attractions that it has to offer, including a scenic drive across the famous Golden Gate Bridge or taking a ride in one of the legendary cable cars, and perhaps even visiting Alcatraz, once a high-security prison and now a busy tourist attraction.
